With Photoshop, it’s easy to cut or copy an element out of one layer and paste it onto another. However, you may accidentally damage the original layer. To avoid this, avoid moving layers. You can create a new layer underneath the original and paste the layer.
Photoshop’s usability is based on a Windows interface. The interface is intuitive, so it’s the first choice for most Windows users.
Photoshop has two types of layers:
* **Layer:** Contains all the elements that you can add in your project. Layers are thought of as the building blocks of your image. They are the basis of your image’s workspace. Layers have one or more forms, such as _outline, fill, mask,_ and _gradient._ For more on layers, see the next section.
* **Group:** Contains all the elements that you can add in your project but has an extra feature — a name — that you can use when selecting or grouping layers. Groups don’t have an independent workspace but they’re useful if you want to work on elements within a group.
As shown in Figure 2-5, layers are accessed by clicking the Layers palette menu item (refer to Figure 2-1). Each time you open or close the Layers palette menu, it hides or displays the layers, respectively, that are active in your open image. If you have only one layer open, you have a Layer palette. If you have two layers open, you have a group, and so on.
To turn on the Layers palette, you can choose View⇒Palette.

## Creating Layers
Think of Photoshop as a very powerful painting tool, capable of doing a range of sophisticated editing operations. Elements, such as layers, are the building blocks of this edifice, and they are created in much the same way that you create a brick wall.
You lay down a layer of color over the background, and then you paint with it. You layer, paint, or erode a color or a pattern and the result is that you create a new layer.
The result of this is that you can create and combine layers to change the way an image appears. The layers allow you to add, subtract, or merge elements.

Open Photoshop Elements and click on the “File” menu. Choose “Open” and then choose the file that you have just downloaded.
In the new Photoshop Elements window, you will see the “Create a Color Fill from a Photo” image. The image is on the left side of the window.
You will see a rectangular panel that indicates that the tool is selected. The tool is selected when it appears in the menu bar.
Press the Ctrl+R keys to activate the tool. If you don’t see the tool, hold the Shift key while pressing the keys.
