sure, i couldnt get past the first two albums. i thought his cover of the beatles youre gonna lose him was brilliant. i liked how he adapted and changed the lyrics of the big hit, but id say that at best this is a quirky/funny little album. it doesnt have the consistency or the sonic variety that his records after clues had. i dont think he could have ever made a truly bad album, but ive only found a few of his albums that i really love. im pretty sure that thats a good thing. i like that im not the only one who actually likes his career-segment-spanning oddities.
excelllent “hard to dislike” stuff, and a pleasant surprise after clue. a++
not much can be said about the second record that could be construed as original, except that i liked the funkiness of it, and palmer was back in the swingin late 60s mode, which is more fun than the psych-rockers. the second side is the better of the two, but the opener isnt as strong, though its still pretty good.

the last of palmer s r&b/soul releases, this one is fully comprised of covers done in the style of the temptations and the groves. palmer did a terrific job covering them, but he really could have ditched a couple of the grooves on the tunes. the more interesting and original cut here is his cover of la la. the ballad takes on a different treatment from the temptations, and is probably palmer s best ballad until he went country in the next decade.
i wish someone would do a comprehensive reissue of palmer s [segmented? lp-by-lp] disco soundtrack. im not surprised to see that he covers a bunch of these tunes, but i never heard of them before. there are some good ones and some really bad ones. all of them are pretty much forgettable, so it would be nice to have a compact disc edition of this stuff. im going to guess that the reason it wasnt produced this way was that it would have been too expensive!
palmers a cappella back up group is jolly solid and actually wasnt doing what rock & roll groups do today, so its no surprise to see that theyre backing him. the whole disc is top-notch, but the inevitable beep-beeped single about masturbation, loves first kiss, is the one song that usually sticks with me from the disc. of course, its a song its damn impossible for me to get out of my head. i think the r&b of the beginning of the album and the lp version of the riffy title track are some of his best i can think of.
with a #1 single, a long and productive relationship with linda ronstadt, and five top 20 lps under his belt, palmer is undoubtedly one of the top acts in the world. but what about the rest of us? as always, it is far more important to look at who is not covered, and none are more under-represented than the wondrous release on mercury.

relax (i can’t get next to you)(1978, epic)ais the reason they pay me to do this. this whole disc is great, but the first single “relax” is the reason i like it best. nice use of wahwah guitars, and a solid bass line from richie hayward. the guitars are fairly thin-sounding, but the song still packs a punch.
